So much for an entire weekend of relaxation...I was brought back to reality on Sunday when I had 500 million errands to run....(by errand # 8 I was already getting a little punchy). Note to self: never leave a weekend day as the one to 'get things done' in this hectic city. L.A traffic + a gas light on empty are never a good thing! At least it was warm enough out for a tank top :)

Shirt Dress

First of all, why is it Winter again in L.A? I thought we were done with the cold fingerless-gloves days and onto warmer things. (I feel like I write about the weather a lot, but really, it effects the way I dress daily so what can I say) Knowing it was going to be a chilly one, I started off in boots and tights and worked my way up. This over-sized striped Elizabeth and James shirt dress is meant to hang loosely, but I added the Theory blazer to give it a little form. And, to keep from freezing to death of course.
So androgynous of me ;)

As much of a pain in the %#* it is to move...redecorating a new home always makes it worth while! Did I mention how I recently traded my west hollywood/melrose digs for something a little more eastward and awesome? Stoked about the new location, the art deco decor and the good energy of the place itself...which will unsurprisingly be a mix of bohemian, vintage and shabby chicness :) Counting down now for the next Pasadena swap meet at the Rose Bowl...I just know there will be treasures awaiting me. I'm overstimulated with interior ideas and spent much of the weekend getting inspiration for which direction to go...

It was so exciting to be invited on and have the opportunity to share my thoughts and 'style' while partnering with such a reputable brand...who are known for creating comfort and peace in the home :) Luckily, I got to spend yesterday afternoon having brunch here in L.A with one of their fashionable and delightful Marketing team members, who is in town visiting for a bloggers conference. After the long distance phone conversations she and I have had about working together, it was so cool to actually have the chance to meet in person! We clicked immediately, chatting so much that we followed brunch with afternoon shopping between the Grove and Melrose...one of my favorite ways to spend a sunny Sunday :) More to come with Peacock Alley!

So, I've been hearing about StyleMint, ShoeMint and JewelMint for months now (all are online shops with products designed by celebrities like Rachel Bilson, Jessica Simpspn, the Olsen twins and Kate Bosworth -- operating through the e-commerce site BeachMint). I first heard through industry 'buzz' that comes through my work at FIDM on a day to day basis, followed by magazine write ups and of course seeing some of my favorite bloggers promoting their products online recently. It's an interesting concept and one that will continue to branch out. The gossip currently is that the 'home' and 'intimate apparel' sectors are the next target...so if you haven't checked out their site yet, check it! If you don't become a member it's good to just be in the know! (you might also like the stylemint blog)

Now, let's talk shoes.

SO...that all brings me to the exciting part. A co-worker of mine gifted me my first pair of booties from ShoeMint, the "Janyce"...totally made my day! After wearing them all day, my feet didn't hurt at all...not bad for the first day of new-shoe-break-in-factor. These casual western inspired (3inch) boots will be great with dresses and shorts when the weather warms up. For now I'm rockin' them with the skinny jean. What am I saying... they'll go with pretty much anything/any weather :)

I may have to become a member of this 'Mint' craze....

A close friend of mine was lucky enough to see the Band of Outsiders show this past NYFW and I could not have been more jealous....especially hearing her say it might have been the best she saw out of numerous shows. Anyway, flipping through look books, the Spring 2012 collection caught my eye....not to mention Michelle Williams is one of my favorite actresses...love that she's who they chose to represent their brand. She looks so much like Mia Farrow in these photos...

I was cleaning out my closet recently and found my long lost flowing sheer leopard blouse in one of my boots! It had fallen from the hanger and landed in there...finding it felt like getting a new shirt again! I paired it with a long maxi skirt today to keep the flow-effect going - which worked out perfectly with it being a windy day...just blowin' along in the wind :) The vintage belt and chain necklace were the final touches - adding some vintage something makes me feel complete....

Theme party pics from last weekend = Friday inspiration:) In honor of her birthday, a friend of mine (who always goes all-out with her parties) transformed her Laurel Canyon tree house on Wonderland Drive into the Alice in Wonderland rabbit hole! I feel like I've been to more theme parties in 2012 than I have in the last 10 years...themes always bring more of an enthusiastic crowd it seems. From the Queen of Hearts, Mad Hatters, flower garden, Caterpillar, Cheshire, the Crow, Alice herself and 'off with their heads'...we had it all covered through this looking glass!

I had another party to attend before this, so I had to be strategical with my outfit....meaning, I didn't go as far as I might have had this been the only fiesta that night. However, just adding the over-sized velvet mad hatter hat to my black crochet vintage dress really made a statement on its own. I kind of want to wear that hat on a normal day....no? :)

What Happens in Vegas...

MAGIC, Platform and PROJECT are what is happening in Vegas! After 3 hectic days of walking the trade shows and talking nonstop, my feet are actually the most happy about it coming to an end. Wearing flats just doesn't matter after a certain point! The best part of this trip for me was Tuesday, walking through FN Platform with our talented and enthusiastic group of footwear design students from FIDM. We were lucky to have so many company representatives (design, sales, branding) from various footwear brands attending talk to our group about their line and anything else footwear related. (Designers Donald J. Pliner his wife, Lisa for Donald J. Pliner, and one of my family members Michele who reps Isola Shoes were those among the many who spoke to us in depth! pictured below) It was such a cool learning experience - and beyond overstimulating to see EVERY shoe brand I can think of all in one place! Shoe heaven. I saw Steve Madden walking around, but unfortunately
didn't get the chance to meet him. Next time!

The top footwear trends for Fall 2012 include: deep colors of maroon, forest green, midnight blues and purple; lots of STUDS, platforms, animal print (python & leopard), colorful aztec print, steel toe tips, sleek black, sparkle/glitter pumps, quilted boots and flats, loafers, more fringe,
and wooden soles….

Vegas itself on day #2 was like a hurricane with the strong winds and cold weather...I was basically freezing the whole time outside of walking the shows. I had a small amount of time to enjoy seeing the city lights and have a really nice dinner in a brand new casino with some friends who
happen to be there as well...

The only downside was that you really aren't allowed to take pictures inside the show...understandably since these are Fall 2012/haven't been seen yet! I did the best I could :)

Where the MAGIC Happens

It's that time again....I'm off to Las Vegas today for the biannual anticipated and hyped MAGIC trade show! I'll also be checking out the FN Platform footwear show for the first time - featuring over 1,500 new and emerging labels! I can't wait to see what new trends will be surfacing this year...

Packing for a quick trip can almost be more difficult than a longer one because you have less options trying to fit everything into a carry-on! I went with a few of my traveling essentials and called it a day....my Miu Miu messenger bag that is great for the airport (it fits so much), Whole Living magazine to keep get me health inspired on the plane, my notepad for networking at the tradeshow, the Chloe wallet that holds all my money, Bumble&Bumble brilliantine for my hair along with the Sultra straighter and my Naked eye-pallet - perfect for travel :) Let's not forget the Ray Bans. For clothes..it's suppose to be chilly in Vegas. I wanted to bring some pastel options but threw a couple scarves in just in case. I like pastels and black mixed together so these combat boots should work well...plus...they're flats. A lot of walking to take place the next few days! Can't wait to post pics from the event once I return...til then... ;)

....someone doesn't like it when I leave town :(

This vintage mod shift dress I bought in a thrift store a few years ago suddenly reappeared out of nowhere in my closet today! (well, technically it was hidden between two other black dresses and I have just been overlooking it for who knows how long). It's definitely an oldie but goodie...and never seems to go out of style. There are also SO many different ways to style it depending on the season, and my mood! Today, the mood was obviously classic black. Can't beat black.

Somewhat newcomer model, Sojorner Morrell, has been all popping up over the place lately from editorial to the runway. The 20 year old New Jersey native just started modeling last June 2011, and has already landed a British Vogue editorial, Prada Resort and Jil Sander campaign....not to mention walking all the major runways from NY Fashion Week to Paris. She has been said to resemble a mix of Samantha Ronson and Agyness Deyn, and is known for her tomboy androgynous appeal

After browsing Sojourners past editorials, I came across this crazy article below from Oct'11...who knew!! If anyone thinks modeling is all glitz & glam this might change your mind....painful!!

"You are looking at the foot of Sojourner Morrell. This is the state it was in on the last day of Fashion Week in Paris, as she walked the Louis Vuitton show. After wearing probably more than a few pairs of ill-fitting heels in the shows she walked in, her feet emerged battered, bruised, and hopefully not broken. And not just any night gown...one that would have one of those long caps with stockings to go with it :) It's not the most flattering ensemble, but there's something cool about over-sized pieces that just hang loosely.

Before 'celebrating' one of the All-American past times yesterday, Superbowl Sunday, I stopped by my friends house who gifted me with the coolest sustainable/recycled metal clutch that he handmade! (This friend is super crafty of all interesting and random things...check out his new blog here!) I love the simple chain of the bag and that I can carry on my shoulder if need be...although holding it clutch style is what I'll probably lean towards. It was a hectic Sunday from the get go so I dressed pretty comfortably in this free-bird tank that I'm obsessed with...maybe it's the fringe. Nice to wrap up the weekend with friends and football...ok, I'm lying, the only part of the game I watched was Madonna at half time :)

We Wear Many Hats

A friend of mine had the great idea of throwing a last minute dinner party this past Monday just to celebrate friends/new beginnings...and to make things a little more interesting, we were all told to wear a hat. Themed gatherings are always a little more fun for some reason- especially with this group! One of my friends didn't get the hat memo, but just so happened to show up wearing one that she had worn to work that day...it was so hilarious witnessing her reaction as she watched people one by one arrive in a hat thinking it was totally coincidental. Finally she said out loud how weird it was, "it's like a hat party or something!".....hahaha. Maybe you had to be there. Anyway...super cool night. This bright red jacket was the first thing that caught my eye this morning, so, I built my outfit around it as I usually do (starting with one piece I want to wear and going from there). The bold color of red has always been one of my favorite colors, although, I hardly ever wear it. Had to bring my faux fur with me to layer up in this fickle LA weather....bikini one day, fur the next...you just never know!

Back to the Beach

Spent an afternoon back in my old stomping grounds of Newport Beach this weekend...with my best friend from TX who came in town for an over-due visit (she tries to come see me once a year...but we somehow skipped 2011). Years ago when I lived in Newport, she moved in with me for a Summer where we spent endless days riding bikes and lounging in the sand. Loving the Spring 2012 Gucci campaign...from the editorials to the runway (Milan Fashion Week)...the art deco style (reminds me of Studio 54) looks fierce with the smokey bold eye makeup and slicked back hair. Black and white remains a huge trend for Spring, as seen here, mixed with metallic and pop-of-color accents in bright green and orange.

I think I'm due for a new pair of sunglasses too...bought my last Gucci pair in 2006.

Went with my black sheer gold studded maxi dress today for the 80 degree weather that has blessed L.A. I love the way this dress hangs straight and fits loosely, but still has an element of sexiness with the side slits and neckline...that can be plunging low if desired :) It's totally comfortable, and easy to dress up or down. (I wore this to a party last weekend and it looked totally different!) That being said, I'm sure it will be one of my Spring go-to's. Oh...and not to forget my new red beaded bracelet I scored at the swap meet last weekend...thought it added a fun touch mixed in with the gold jewelry accents....

Minimal Makeup

I just realized I haven't done a makeup post in soooo long.

Last night I caught up on the upcoming makeup trends for Spring 2012 and have posted a few of my favorite looks for the season. Often makeup trends look cool on the runway, but not so much for everyday street style. These subtle trends below can definitely be incorporated into your daily routine....play around and have some fun with the following minimalistic styles: 1) matte complexion 2) contoured cheeks 3) nude lips VS the red 4) Bare eyed mascara...think Twiggy 60's style :)

Sunday Swap

Went to the Fairfax swap meet yesterday with a couple girlfriends and ended up spending over 3 hours browsing all the vendors, trying on vintage dresses/over-sized sunglasses/turquoise jewelry and hearing some jazz music while we took a break to refuel with snacks :) It has been a few months since I've gone to this swap meet (held in the Fairfax High School parking lot)...am now completely re-addicted.

Next Sunday it is!

Deep Pockets

Whenever I'm running late in the morning for work and need to get dressed fast, I tend to grab my go-to black skinny leg pants with the big deep pockets. They go with pretty much everything, and are totally comfortable and chic at the same time. I've dressed them up with a simple sheer blouse and high heel, and I've dressed them down worn with a vintage T-shirt and combat boot. Today was in-between with a tan ankle bootie, loose knit sweater and my never-leave-the-house-without leather jacket.

Lastly, thank god for hats...on top of me running behind schedule, I was not

having a good hair day this morning either!

Alexander Wang Pre-Fall

What I wouldn't give for one of these Alexander Wang pieces (his Spring 2012 show was the highlight of my NY Fashion Week experience this past September). He continues to nail it every season just as he did below with this edgy yet sophisticated chic cohesive Pre-Fall 2012 collection. I'm a sucker for black and white combinations, sheer fabrics...especially mixed with knit or leather materials.

Under the Bridge

Over the weekend I finally explored the LA River during a photo shoot I modeled for with an old friend/photographer that was long overdue. Although the weather/lighting conditions were kind of perfect, I did nearly freeze to death standing on/under the infamous 6th and 4th street bridges for hours in my sheer-to-light weight wardrobe ensembles (goosebumps pictured below, along with the color block platform heels I love!). Oh the price you pay for a good photograph :) Despite being cold, we had a blast running location to location, dodging cars on the bridge to get that perfect mid-street photo, and negotiating with the bicycle cops about permits to be there. The RHCP hit played in my mind throughout the day thinking these were the actual bridges that Anthony Kiedis was singing about. Anyway, the shoot ended up being a total success, and it was so cool to reconnect with my friend in a creative way. Can't wait to see the final images when he sends them my way!

So I may have been called Mrs. Partridge today by my smart-mouth bff, but I didn't let that ruin my good mood. (Ok, I admit that I died laughing when I googled The Partridge Family to see what she meant). ANYWAY. It's rare when an outfit can have a lot going on, yet be simple at the same time. That was pretty much the case today with my tights, knee socks, pinstriped shorts, woven belt, ruffled turtleneck sweater and zipper jacket...somehow it all worked and I'm pretty sure it's because of the color palette. If I could buy an entire new wardrobe right now, I would invest in mainly black and white pieces....

Who doesn't love Alexa Chung's street style ability of mixing that tomboy look with a girly flare. We rarely see the style icon/model get it wrong with an outfit with her effortless fashion sense appeal. On a slightly different note, I was reading an old interview she did for V Magazine in 2009 (that I found intriguing) where she talks about her daily grind, along with thoughts on living in London vs. NYC...

I spent Sunday afternoon roaming around Franklin Village, one of my favorite places to hang, just beneath the Hollywood sign. I brought my comfortable cashmere poncho and scarf out of hiding because LA suddenly decided to get chilly again, even with the sun out. What else does one need on a lazy day than a little bit of cashmere, the charming atmosphere of Birds cafe, followed by street sales with clothing racks and used books :)

So glad it's the weekend again, happy Friday! I almost forgot all about this last set of photos from an afternoon (one week ago) while I was still in Dallas visiting for Christmas. Those faux leather pants were perfect for the cold crisp weather, along with my biker boots and the fingerless mittens that I haven't brought out of hiding back home in LA. Looking again at these photos does make me miss the changing of seasons and the beautiful fall colors. But, I guess no matter where you are, there's always something you'll miss about somewhere else!

California Girl

After a long holiday vacation in Texas, followed by a wild New Years Eve back in LA, I'm finally getting into the swing of things again this week with that thing called work. It's been so nice being back in LA and seeing palm trees again...especially with this amazing 80 degree clear blue sky weather we're having. I was so excited today that I could wear my new psychedelic looking maxi dress without having to put on tights underneath to keep warm. I've never been a big fan of cold weather unless I'm sitting by a fire...guess I've always just been a California girl at heart :)

Rock the Casbah

We Rocked the Casbah New Years Eve at the global theme party my friends threw in Laurel Canyon... in honor of 2012 and this last year of the Mayan calender. It was the perfect start to this new beginning with good friends and energy that kept us dancing throughout the night and well into the morning. Our DJ was amazing, along with our very own professional photographer who set up an area to shoot...best part though was how inspired everyone was to go all out on the theme of global ethnicity attire...the girls especially, of course! The atmosphere inside and outside the house looked insane the way it was transformed into an opium-like den, totally setting the mood for the evening. The draped ethnic fabrics and glowing candle light made everything so comfortable and inviting I was hoping my friend might just keep it that way forever...then again, she might need furniture versus a disco ball ;)

Another theme of the night was the topic of 'intentions'...having an intention for the new year, and then setting it free, as our intentions don't always happen the way we plan. I like the idea of intentions much more than resolutions. There was an area designated outside for anyone who wanted to write their intention down on paper and put it in the 'special' box...which we would burn the next morning to release and let go to the universe!! Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens in 2012...

People say the older you get, the faster time goes. It seems to be the truth looking back on 2011 which flew by faster than any other year I can remember. New Years Eve (and birthdays) is the time you get to start over with a clean slate... who doesn't love that!?! 'Even' numbered years tend to be more lucky for me...so come on 2012....I hope good things are to come...
I'm looking forward to celebrating tonight with close friends to start off the new year in a fun and fresh direction. The party we have planned is going to be crazy fun - can't wait to post the pictures!

Old Charm & New Steps

My grandmother handed me down a few of her old vintage charm necklaces last night, followed by the arrival of my last Christmas present, which were delivered from Steve Madden to my front porch this morning...just in time for me to pack them in my suitcase and head back to California later today. First and foremost, I LOVE these chain necklaces...one was a heart locket my grandfather gave my grandma when they were only 16 years old....another, a California Pebble Beach charm...how fitting for me :) On the 'new' side...I like the simplicity of these ankle booties and the low comfortable heel I can wear day or night. Just a few more things to pack that I hope don't push my suitcase over 50lbs!!

Wide Open Spaces

These country roads remind me of childhood and weekend trips on the outskirts of Dallas to our family farm house, built by my great-grandparents. It was there I got a break from my city upbringing and learned to ride horses, hook a fishing line, shoot cans with a shotgun and even drive a pickup truck!
It's strange that no matter how many years go by, certain places trigger memories you forgot were even there. Driving under the bridge I haven't seen in over 5 years (it used to be part of railroads tracks) was the first strong reminder for me...I pictured climbing on top of it to 'explore' as a kid. The pastures and the long cedar tree lined driveway leading up to the house are still the same :)

I've appreciated my faux fur coat much more these last few days in Dallas. In 35 degree weather it's more of a necessity vs. being in LA where we only hope for cold enough temperatures to bring them out of the closet! I had also forgotten about this sheer maxi dress that I loved wearing over the Summer...problem solved...added some tights with a sweater and now it's a Winter dress too :) I love layering and turning favorite pieces into something you can wear year-round.

Leaving California to Texas today for Christmas...a whole week back home! I'm always anxious to see my family and old friends....I only make it home about once a year these days so I try to cram everything and everyone in that I can. It would be nice to just relax on my 'vacation', but there are just too many faces I'll want to see. The hectic pace is part of the fun.

I'm always sad to leave TX after I'm home for the holidays...the familiarity 'fits me' in many ways, and there are people I miss deeply there. But, every year I come back to California, I still smile as the plane descends looking over the ocean and know that this is home now too.

Safe travels to wherever 'home' is this holiday weekend, ya'll!

Just sayin'...I'll be mellowing out to "Yellow Brick Road" on my Ipod flying home..Angus & Julia Stone's album Down The Way is SO good. It has 20+ songs on it, and they're ALL good.

Las Familias

Every year my office (FIDM Career Center) partners with Student Activities to bring some holiday fun to the children of Las Familias del Pueblo..."a non-profit community center serving garment workers and their children in the Los Angeles Fashion District. At Las Familias, children participate in after school programs and receive assistance with homework". The neighborhood of this organization is on the rougher side of downtown LA. The school has a tall wooden fence around the back entrance which opens to an outdoor playground, sheltering the kids with a safe place to play from the outside.

The kids of course still love arts and crafts projects like coloring Christmas pictures, and making Christmas cards. But, we discovered from our experience last year that having a finger-nail painting & face painting 'station' was also very popular amongst the children...so we stepped it up this time with extra colors :) Then there is the super messy/fun cookie decorating...followed by cupcakes one of our co-workers family members donated who works in the catering business. Talk about a sugar high...these kids were bouncing off the walls..bet their parents loved us when they arrived to pick them up! To end the afternoon with more excitement (added to the sugar overload)... "Santa" arrived and took a photo with each child, along with giving a special gift. The look on their adorable faces when they receive a present (or even just get their face painted) is priceless. The staff here at FIDM looks forward to this day each year just about as much as the kids do.

Tacky Xmas Sweater Party

Shockingly, I've never gone to a (popular themed) 'tacky sweater' party before, until this past Saturday, where I actually had 2 tacky parties to attend. My friend and I went thrift store shopping the day of to find something...but as we browsed the clothing racks of truly UGLY xmas sweaters, we started second guessing and wondering 1)would people really dress up?...and 2) who wants to go to a party feeling not-cute? Then my friend spotted a vintage sequin Bob Mackie sweater dress that looked like it would fit me perfectly, which, it did. It was definitely borderline tacky with it's primary color argyle shaped sequins, but also very festive and fun. I bought it and called it a day while my friend decided to just wear a hot sequin number she already had at home. All that being said...THANK GOD we didn't buy the matching ugly brown reindeer sweaters we considered...hardly anyone at either party dressed up!! Some of the guys got the memo which was surprising. The second party had an Ice Queen theme as well...so there were a couple of those costumes among the few ugly sweaters walking around. Random!! I was sort of in the middle in my Bob Mackie find (which I paired with fishnet tights)....was I dressed as part of the theme, or did people think I was serious? Either way, we all had so much fun it didn't seem to matter....good friends, ambiance, hilltop views, fire pits (with marshmellows!), music going with a drum set to back it up, awesome food, endless champagne and even jello shots...which I haven't touched since college. Sunday morning I remembered why :)

RVCA Headquarters

Another company 'trip' to the RVCA headquarters in Orange County to tour the building and meet their designers. The best part for me was walking in to the photographic shrine of Erin Wasson (who collaborated with the brand on a line back in 2010)...she is pretty much my favorite model and style icon. RVCA is more of an art based brand, which set sets them apart from other action sports companies. Because of it's art focus, RVCA is associated with the street graffiti subculture...their Artist Network Program (ANP) showcases well known and unknown artists and musicians (Mars Volta & Matt Costa to name a couple) who inspire our generation.

The headquarters are amazing, aside from the art displays (check out the hilarious naughty smurfs below) and photography, there is also a full on gym with an octagon ring for ultimate fighting training. Then there is the warehouse and the retail company store where you can shop by invitation/appointment only. RVCA was so thoughtful to give our whole group gift bags with t-shirts and hats inside to end the afternoon :) This is definitely the place to work for the artistically inspired.

Corduroy & Loafers

We were told to dress casually on the day my co-workers and I visited the Volcom (see previous post) and RVCA (will post about soon!) headquarters in Orange County. I was happy about wearing my corduroy jacket that's been waiting patiently in my closet, along with my somewhat new faux snakeskin slippers that definitely need more breaking in. I stayed with a friend in Newport beach the night before so that I wouldn't have to drive in morning traffic from LA to OC...but perhaps more importantly so we could stay up late drinking wine having total girl-talk. I miss living in Newport and being close to the beach sometimes. This was one of those perfect crisp clear mornings you just want to play hookey.

Volcom Headquarters

Yesterday my co-workers at FIDM and I went on a 'field trip' (from L.A to Orange County/Costa Mesa!) to tour the VOLCOM headquarters and meet their design team. I was taking pictures left and right during our tour...total over-stimulation. Afterward, the Volcom team was too kind, allowing us to shop in their private retail store (big discount!!) which is only open for employees/friends & family. We were all feeling very lucky to get some Christmas shopping out of the way at 'work' today...

I only bought ONE thing for me :)

I have a lot of friends that work in the action sports industry, and have always been sort of jealous of how cool their work environments are. Volcom, being one of the industry's top leaders, is a prime example. Walking up to the building through the parking lot it's just normal to see wetsuits hanging off the back of trucks to dry from the earlier morning (or lunch break) surf. Then there's the snowboard days, company trips, music & artist collaborations, the volcom record label, surf/skate/snow/motocross teams with pros like Bruce Irons...basically just a ton of cool stuff happening at this company. The vibe there is more family-like and it's a totally open, friendly and inspirational environment. Everyone who works there really lives the so-cal lifestyle of the brand...as it should be. Just being there made me really want to 'sharpen' my snowboarding skills this year...(gave up the surfing idea about 4 years ago when I realized I was just not ever going to be good!)

We ended the Volcom tour with Mexican food at Mi Casa and a game of old school Pac Man!

Fashionable Dining

I met a friend I hadn't seen in way too long for lunch at the cutest little restaurant I somehow had yet to discover, Tiara Cafe. Tiara is right in the middle of the LA downtown fashion district and considered 'fashionable dining' not only because of it's location, but also because they advertise designers and also participate in fashion events like the Art Walk & Fashion Food Walk. Tiara is owned by the renowned chef and designer, Fred Eric. (Fred also opened Los Feliz's popular hipster hangout Fred 62, for those of you who know LA) I'm going to become a regular at this place, aside from fashion,
the food is insanely good:)

...the tuna melt I ordered...I mean...avocados and everything?! Yes please. It looked more like a huge cheese melt to me when they brought it out....which I would have been totally fine with too. I couldn't live without cheese.

A new week...I spend quite a lot of time in this park outside of where I work. When I think about all the lunch dates I've had with friends and co-workers on these benches, the days just seem to run together. Anyway, this new Michael Kors tote bag (which is actually more of a hand-me-down) works out perfect for the days I bring my lunch - it fits EVERYTHING and still leaves room. Over sized bags can be a pain/heavy (especially in leather) to carry, but they are just so accommodating if you are one to always have a lot of, stuff :) Also..if you don't already have this Dolce Vita Jamison bootie, you should get it! By far my favorite footwear purchase of the year - perfect day shoe that can transition to night time...

Lazy Day

Starting Monday, things are going to be so hectic for the next 2 weeks before I leave for Christmas 'vacation' in Texas...I don't even want to look at my day planner. I'm one of those who writes everything down. Anyway, knowing that, today I enjoyed a totally lazy Saturday with highlights such as: my morning coffee, my cat napping next to me, candle and incense burning, the arrival of my new black knit basic over-sized sweater (shocking how hard a good black basic is to find), setting up my silver mini-tree for my bedroom, and last but not least, cleaning out all my makeup which was SO unorganized. I did a before and after pic to show the progress :) My products consist mostly of Smashbox cosmetics, with an even mix of Laura Mercier, MAC and Bobbi Brown. See...I'm productive even on days that I don't leave the house. I tell myself this at least and feel better...do what works for ya!

A friend of mine gifted me that handmade candle above...one of my favorite print ideas he has done. I am still on his case about getting these random crafts he does on a website...

Canyon Roads

My anticipation was building on our (somewhat recent) 2 hour 'road trip' from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon with 2 of my favorite people, my stylish aunt&uncle, who are more like my best friends. They live in AZ, and this was my first time ever to see the Canyon! There were a few questionable truck stops we passed by (reminded us of scenes from the twisted Brad Pitt & Juliet Lewis serial killer movie Kalifornia)...however, I loved driving through the Painted Desert, the reservations, and stopping by different trading posts and Native American jewelry stands along the way. The original handmade turquoise pieces were hard to pass up...

This guy works here everyday making his own jewelry while hundreds of tourists pass through. He and his family live down the hill outside the window...without any electricity!! He was such a sweet friendly person with a genuine interest in others...which can be rare! The ring I wanted to buy was way too big so I walked away from it :( Should have probably bought and sized it down in hindsight! What I REALLY wanted was the cutest reservation puppy ever, Bear, that had luckily been rescued the week before....

Breathtaking...no wonder it's one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The background looks more like a painting than a photograph. We had a picnic on some beach towels we found in the trunk, and made sure to NOT feed the huge crow who was eying our sandwiches. I don't think he wanted my beer though...only one allowed at high altitudes like this ;)

Then we had our contrived Thelma and Louise moment....we always end up somehow laughing to the point of peeing in our pants when we're together, I love that.

After a long day of sightseeing we hit the road back through 42 degree temperature en route to Flagstaff (I was so excited to see snow that we had to pull over and get a couple pics).

This place, Flintstone park and Redrock City was so RANDOM we had to swing in. I was always a Flintstone fan, I liked their dog/dinosaur Dino the best as a kid...but there was also Pebbles and BamBam that I actually had doll figures of. Who knew a place like this existed...makes me wonder what other cartoon character-type parks are out there! Anyway, we totally dorked out here as you can see below, I couldn't even post all the pics.

Winter White Lace

Turning a 'Summer' piece into a Winter look can sometimes be an option. I wore this off-white lace mini skirt without tights over the months of July-September, and I guess I've just kind of been missing it. The WLD (white lace dress) trend was so popular last Spring and is still being seen in the colder months, often paired with black boots, black sweaters and/or black leather jackets for an edgier look against the feminine lace. I was so bummed to forget my leather jacket by my door this morning.

I needed it too, it's COLD in LA!

In the Trenches

When my friend came and met me for lunch yesterday, the first thing she asked me was "Are you solving some crimes tonight?"....what a smartass. Reminds me of myself sometimes I guess that's why I like her :) So yes, the trench is a little 'Detective/Dick Tracy'...which really is just another reason to love trench coats. This trench is extra special because 1) it is vintage, and 2) it is vintage Burberry!! ...the inside plaid lining just doesn't come like that anymore. How lucky that it is Olive too,

A Current Affair

My friends and I went to a fun and anticipated event Saturday night, A Current Affair, in downtown LA's Cooper Design Center's penthouse. A Current Affair is 'a "pop-up vintage marketplace" with 20+ vintage vendors who all have carefully curated collections including apparel, jewelry, accessories, eye wear, and ephemera.'.......AKA vintage heaven. We stopped and combed through just about every single vendor there...by the end of it I was almost dizzy. Plus, I don't know what the bartender put in the one drink we had :/ But really, the over-stimulation of eye candy happening had me overwhelmed to a point where I had to stop and breath deeply a couple times! From vintage Chanel, Oscar De La Renta, Fendi, Carolina Herrera and McQueen to name a few... to sequins and furs...to Native American ponchos and turquoise jewelry...boho chic to high end fashion...they pretty much had it all :)

A really cool part of the night was running into my friend Jude (below) who also works at FIDM with me...I had no idea he was one of the vendors participating and also is involved is the event's organization as a whole. Now, I hate to play favorites, but Jude's booth was the best...finding special pieces like this truly is an art. He has this leather & knit top (below) that I'm going to soon be stalking him for!

Fringe Moccasins

Instead of hitting the huge Fashion Square mall when I was visiting AZ last week, I hit historic Old Town Scottsdale where you get the real flavor of the Old West. I knew that was the place I would find the perfect moccasin boots I have been picturing in my head for the last month. The shops sell quality Native American crafts and apparel, offering everything from hand-woven Navajo rugs to silver and turquoise jewelry.The wooden sidewalks, horse&carriage rides and overall rustic feel of this little strip beat a crowded shopping mall any day.

Buying them in Old Town made them much more special...UNTIL I found out the moccasin brand, MinneTonka, also sells to Urban Outfitters!! Ahhh...I went all the way to Arizona when I could have walked down my own street to Urban haha. Oh well...still cooler that I got them where I did I suppose :)

Just a Small Town Girl

Small towns in the mountains are so endearing and charming that I'm always positive upon arrival that "this" is the place I want to move and lead a more peaceful/quiet life. Usually by day 2 I'm past that thought, and realize I might just be more of a city girl than I'd like to admit. That was the case after a couple days in Flagstaff last weekend...awesome getaway though, great thrift shops, and I loved seeing trains and walking on some railroad tracks!
My 'Penny Lane' inspired jacket kept me warm - oh how I have missed wearing it...

I guess the fact that I'm always happy to come back to LA is a good sign that I still love my city. And, there is still so much exploring left to do within it, that I shouldn't get bored for awhile to come :)

Last weekend consisted of a couple mini road trips (I love road trips!)...one being Scottsdale AZ to Flagstaff where it snowed the week before :) I felt my checkered plaid shirt was appropriate for the pine tree forests and random truck stops we would be encountering...

I stayed at The Inn at 410 Bed&Breakfast in Flagstaff when I was 14 years old...a long time ago. Either the place changed it's decor since then, or I forgot how tacky it was! However, tacky kind of makes for part of the fun when you stay at random places like this on a road trip. The "Southwest" room really completed the feel with full on wallpaper, chili peppers, fake plants and native printed rugs & blankets. There was also a wooden ladder in the room and let's not forget about the jacuzzi tub - upgrade!

The lobby might have taken the cake for the tacky factor, but again, entertaining. The staff was super friendly, and thoughtful enough to leave hot apple cider out at all times with Brandy and Vodka bottles for their guests to mix. Very methodical, the more you drink, the less you care
about your surroundings!

With holidays and parties approaching, the biggest evening wear trend (along with sequins) is getting reacquainted with our long lost friend, Velvet. Fall runways were consistent showing velvet separates... I'm a little hesitant on crushed velvet, but then I just think of Stevie Nicks and Mick Jagger rocking the trend in the 70's and suddenly it all seems Ok :)

This is me above actually 'spinning' true Stevie style to Nightbird, in my friends velvet burnout wrap :)
